FOURTEEN

‘I think you drank me dry last night,’ Catherine Bracken said, taking her ex-husband’s overcoat and hanging it on a hook in the hallway closet. ‘The fridge is devoid of tinnies.’

‘I’ll settle for a cup of coffee,’ Bracken said, following her through to the living room. ‘Is Sarah in?’

‘She’s staying at her friend’s house again.’ She paused. ‘Have you eaten?’

‘No, I haven’t been home.’

‘What’s Chaz going to say about that?’

‘We’re not joined at the hip, Cath.’

‘I know that, but she is your girlfriend. You should communicate with her.’

‘We made it a rule not to see each other every night. To give each other space,’ he said, sitting down on the couch that he had woken up on that morning.

‘That doesn’t mean you can’t call her.’

‘I’m not even finished work yet.’

‘Really? What are you working on at this time of the evening?’

‘You for one should know how crazy my hours get.’

‘I also know how much you can spin a tale, Bracken.’

‘That kettle won’t boil itself,’ he said in reply.

She stood looking at him.

‘Oh, right, I’ll go and put it on,’ he said, getting up. She followed him into the kitchen.

Bracken didn’t want to come right out and ask Catherine for Leon’s address, thinking he would make some more enquiries first.

‘Have you managed to talk to Leon about the theatre tickets?’ Bracken asked.

‘No, not yet.’

‘And you’re sure he’ll be able to get them?’

She turned away from him and left the kitchen. He made two mugs of coffee and took them through. Catherine was sitting in a chair, chewing on a nail. She smiled as she took her mug. She took a sip and set it down on a side table next to her.

‘Is everything okay with you and Chaz, Sean?’

‘Of course it is,’ he said.

‘Then why are you here with me and not at home with her?’

‘I just got to thinking after you told me about Leon’s impending proposal. Are you sure you don’t want to get hitched?’

‘Do any of us?’

‘Don’t be coy.’

‘I just said that I think he might be heading down that road. He told me he loves me and he’s willing to wait until our wedding night to…you know…’

Fuck my ex-wife. ‘I know.’

‘I’m just hesitant.’

‘Would you live here?’ he asked. ‘You know…after the wedding.’

‘Leon wants to. He just rents his place. He says he could move in here until we find a place together. He would put money down, but his ex-wife cleaned him out in the divorce. But as I said last night, I don’t want to marry him. He’s moving things along too fast. I don’t want him spending the night, never mind spending the rest of his life with me.’

Bracken nodded. ‘You have to tell him. End it now, if you have to.’

‘I can’t. Not at this moment in time. I know what you’re thinking: Leon’s trying it on. But he’s not. He said he got cleaned out, but she still has to give him half the money from the sale of their house. He’s living on his wages just now, but he’ll have a few notes when the house gets sold.
